Auckland Transport’s City Rail Link Information Portal
The City Rail Link is one of the most crucial infrastructure projects in Auckland. I personally support the project although at different timings (See my Alternative Auckland Transport Plan – Mini Series) and am aware the actual cost of the project using the Owen McShane Rail Fallacy will be around $3.6 billion – not the $2.4b currently claimed.
Feedback from submission to Chapter 11 (Transport) in the Draft Auckland Plan were supportive of the CRL. Although submissions into funding the CRL through the Draft Long Term Plan and Auckland voters having a big say in the 2013 Local Elections with either the current council being voted back in or chucked out have not occurred yet.
I do agree with Auckland Transport Blog that an information blitz is needed to wider Auckland about the CRL. A blitz that lists ALL benefits and ALL consequences (positive, negative and opportunity costs) in an easy to understand way for wider Auckland.
There is a lot of ignorance, misinformation and misunderstanding about the impacts of the CRL – one that can be seized on by the The Right and used to defeat the project. An information blitz and probably extensive workshops about the CRL would help educate the public and convince them that sinking $3.6b into a tunnel and three stations (funding question not withstanding) would be an investment for the next 100 years.
Will be interesting to see who takes up the challenge – I have heard rumblings Campaign for Better Transport were looking into such a campaign.
