Question on Urban Development

Is There Already a Unitary Plan – Ready to Rock and Roll?

In March next year, we ratepayers get to give our next round of feedback (after the Civic Forum focus group in which I attended) on the Unitary Plan – the planning and land use rulebook for Auckland.

I have covered the Civic Forum that I participated in last month (speaking of which I need to chase up Council for owing me travel expenses) here at BR:AKL in some length. However upon reviewing my past submissions and current events happening currently (tongue-twister 😛 ) I thought it my be time to ask the readers another question: “How would you like to see your Auckland by 2040?”

Your answer to that question by enlarge will indicate whether you are going to support or oppose the Unitary Plan (which will dictate how your Auckland will be by 2040). But as we go through the motions of writing the Unitary Plan and bringing it into operation (providing it does not get bogged down in the Environment Court next September) I am actively wondering how complex this rule book will be, and whether there is an alternative for the Unitary Plan out there, pretty much ready to rock and roll.

Sure it needs a bit of polishing up and its coverage extended to the parts of Auckland not covered, but the main gist of it is ready to go. This alternative incorporates both aspects of planning – prescriptive, and liberal open-ended; as well as catering for intensification and the sprawl. Okay this alternative idea might be deemed simplistic, but that could be very well the beauty of this alternative;  its simplicity and adaptability to the ever-changing environment now and in the future.

So I’ll embed below the Land Use Outline from my Auckland Plan submission that was submitted last year. I shall use that part of the submission as the draft baseline for the eventual full (and updated) submission and policy/discussion document for the Unitary Plan and even in the campaign for Papakura Local Board next year.

As I said in the document, check back often for updates and revisions to this simplified alternative to the Unitary Plan – the one rule book to rule us all – literally
