Ambitious and it can be done

From the 7th of July you will be able to submit on your Local Board’s Draft Plan for the next three years. Go to Shape Auckland (from the 7th) to find out more on your Local Board’s ideas and how to submit on them.

For me I live in the Papakura Local Board area to which we have the Papakura Metropolitan Centre and a mix of a urban and rural catchment. Now Papakura is a bit of a mixed bag at the moment with its positives and negatives. I won’t dwell on the negatives insofar as that Papakura Metropolitan Centre and immediate surrounds need some serious work to which the Local Board has recognised (as has the community). The positives for Papakura can be built on (such as transport links and generous open spaces) and looking at what the Local Board is wanting it can happen (subject to that little thing called funding).

Yesterday I got an update on the Papakura Local Board Draft Local Plan and what the Local Board are wanting to do. You can see below:

Some key points that caught my attention:

metropolitan centre plannedd for people rather than cars

  • Designing the metropolitan centre (master plan)
  • Safety patrols and street ambassadors
Joined-up thinking for the Great South Road and its centres
  • Great South Road spatial development framework

Excellent around the Metropolitan Centre Master Plan. Something I am preparing a presentation for the Auckland Development Committee (subject to speaking rights) later this month

safe cycling and walking network across the south

  • Greenways Plan for the south
  •  Links in cycling and walking network and coastal routes
  • Clear links between town centre and rail station
  • Inclusive footways to meet the needs of people with disabilities, the elderly and mothers with pushchairs

Improve safety and ease of movement

  •  Push Auckland Transport for:
    • Bridges over rail crossings at Manuroa Road andWalters Road
    • new rail station at Glenora (Southgate)
    • Low floor buses
    • Better travel information

Excellent stuff there around transport especially with active transport links and the continued push for Glenora Station which Auckland Transport is still the biggest hinderance to the station being built

There is also a strong push for social infrastructure by the Local Board as well. This is very good to see as the Local Board are switched on the critical needs of social infrastructure that binds communities together. Something their central counterparts in the City Centre are a little bit behind on at the moment.

Kudo’s to the Papakura Local Board and what they would like to see in response to our feedback. Consultation starts Monday to which I will be submitting on

  1. Wow, that incredibly encouraging! I’ll be submiting pretty much for the above in a few days time… If only we could press the fast forward button on their initiatives!

    1. I believe the Local Board want to go full throttle here on the entire thing. Only two things stopping them is AT and their 30% budget cuts (as well as their stubbornness) and the Long Term Plan being dumped and having to be rebuilt ground up.

Lets see where this goes though
