Housing Going Awry – Again?

Seems we are already missing targets

The Special Housing Accord was designed to get housing supply in Auckland moving with a target of 39,000 consents all done and dusted ready for actual building within three years. The first anniversary of the Accord has just been and gone with a report (plus review) due in a couple of weeks time.

In the meantime here are some interviews on Radio NZ this morning with both Deputy Mayor Penny Hulse, and Housing Minister Dr Nick Smith on the Auckland housing situation.

I supposed this was coming especially with some developers like Addison walking away from the Housing Accord as is. I do wonder though if developers are waiting for the Unitary Plan to become operative in 2016 with all the final zones and the Rural Urban Boundary in final position.

  1. I’ve been involved in developing property for nearly thirty years and even though I understand it’s English that Penny Hulse is speaking, she didn’t say one thing that made sense.

And Nick Smith saying ‘stretch targets’, read ‘stretching the truth.’

When they first announced this over 12 months back they said houses built, then it was houses started, then is was section developed, then it was sections started, then it was sectioned sections consented, now it is land released under SHA where sections can be development – subject to the owners wanting to develop the land, subject to council being able to supply infrastructure, subject to trades being available to build anything, and of course the one thing they are overlooking it will be still subject to any homeowner being able to afford to buy what they product, irrespective if it is want they want to buy.

They were told from the start there figures were nonsense.

    1. I was going to put a longish comment underneath yours but an email with attachments from the Housing Project Office has come through and am going to take a good read of it over the weekend.

Dont worry the reply comment will still be coming 🙂
