Walk the talk: Auckland’s decision lanes open

Aucklanders will have the chance to walk the talk this week, following the construction of two ‘decision lanes’ at Britomart that represent the options available for the future of the city’s transport network.

The decision lanes present a choice of paths, one offering the enhanced transport network and the other the basic transport network – the choices outlined in the council’s 10-year budget consultation which closes on Monday 16 March.

People will then be invited to walk through a doorway that represents their choice, which will be recorded on digital counters above each one. Council staff will be on hand with information to help show Aucklanders how they can have their say in the consultation before it closes next Monday.

Auckland Mayor Len Brown says the doorways show just how big a decision Auckland has to make, and that the more people involved in helping make that decision the better.

“These decision lanes, although symbolic, represent the two stark choices ahead for Aucklanders,” says Mr Brown.

“We can maintain our existing transport network and accept that with the expected increase in population we are going to get more and more snarled up, or we can have an enhanced transport network that provides transport options for Aucklanders, and will help keep the city moving as it grows.

“It is hugely important that everyone has their say on our future. For too long we have postponed these crucial decisions, but no more. Auckland has a choice to make – and now is the time to make it.”
