Governing Body To Meet Thursday – Discussing Long Term Plan, and Port of Auckland

Mayor’s Long Term Plan Recommendations to be Tabled

On Thursday the Auckland Council Governing Body meets to consider amongst other things two large items of topic interest to Auckland.

First is the Port of Auckland situation as the Port continues with the Bledisole Wharf extensions despite Council requesting them to stop until the Future Port Study is complete next year. Now whether the Council pushes the Big Red Button and goes Thermonuclear or someone is going to be left crying at the end of the entire saga is yet to be seen.

Second topic on the Agenda paper is the Long Term Plan being introduced again to the Governing Body. That is the Mayor will introduce his recommendations before the Budget Committee meets May 7.

It will be interesting to see what the Mayor’s recommendations are and how the Councillors will react to them in light of the submissions to the Long Term Plan earlier this year. The point being have any of them heard, listened and taken on board what the submitters are calling for especially with transport, rates, and operational expenditure (the OPEX).

Noting that the Electric trains in three and six car set configuration were approaching “full” already in this morning’s peak on the Southern Line you would have to be dense and I mean dense not to “listen” to the LTP submitters wanting more investment on active and public transport modes (rather than say a Reeves Road Flyover).

So we will see which way things will go on Thursday at the Governing Body in regards to the Port, and Long Term Plan issues.
