Yay to Auckland Transport
After Auckland Transport got sharply critiqued when it held the City Rail Link showcase in the City Centre but made no plans and/or mention to carry the showcase through the rest of Auckland, AT decided to finally go on that road show through Auckland.

City Rail Link Showcase
Aucklanders will have the opportunity to learn more about the City Rail Link (CRL) when Auckland Transport brings its CRL Showcase to town centres in west, east, south and north Auckland.
The showcase is going to town centres in response to requests from many of those who attended the showcase in the City Centre in April, for it to be taken to smaller centres.
Auckland’s population is expected to grow by 700,000 in the next 30 years with the CRL considered vital to meet the city’s traffic needs by 2040.
It will unlock the rail network, creating 50 percent more capacity across the region and more than twice the capacity at Britomart Station.
This will double the number of people within 30 minutes of the city by reducing the time and increasing the frequency of most trips, as well as allowing for more connections between rail, ferry and bus services.
“The CRL is essential to Auckland’s planned integrated public transport network,” says Chris Meale, CRL Project Director. “The integrated public transport network will give people better access to a wider range of higher paying jobs while giving employers a greater pool of talent for those jobs. It will also be a catalyst for integrated land use development around the train stations and new bus / train interchanges.”
Glen Eden Business Association manager Jennifer Conlon says the local community will be very interested to learn about the CRL and how the first stage of construction will roll out later this year.
Peter White, General Manager Takapuna Beach Business Association, says the flow on effects of the CRL will assist Takapuna and North Shore residents commuting to and from the city centre.
The CRL Showcase is being held:
- outside Glenmall in Glen Eden, Wednesday 20 May.
- opposite West City Shoes, on Great North Road, Henderson Town Centre, Thursday 21 May.
- outside LynnMall, New Lynn, Friday 22 May.

Remember:
Double that for the 6 car sets. So a single 6 car and a single 3 car set full of passengers is the equivalent of an entire Auckland Council Civic Car Park worth of cars not on the road. AND ultimately (and thanks to Transport Blog for the quick math): CRL allows 48 trains per hour. Multiply by 750 per train and that’s 36k people per hour or ~42 civic carparks.
