Ben’s Thoughts: What if Auckland Could Build the City Rail Link Itself? #Auckland2016

Time to forget Government and do the Auckland Transit Link (CRL) Ourselves?

With the Government continuing to dither of its contribution to the Auckland Transit Link (the City Rail Link); ‘What If Auckland were to fund 100% of the Auckland Transit Link itself?’

How?

As I have always said a three-way split but this time with altered dynamic owing to the Government dithering in paying the Iron Price. The three way split being:\

  • 33% Auckland Council via debt
  • 33% via consortia which would build and manage the stations on the CRL (Auckland Transit Link). If done right like overseas the consortia would own and development the land around and over the stations becoming a landlord. The returns would repay the debt taken for building the Auckland Transit Link stations.
  • 34% Lottery like what was used by to complete the Sydney Opera House?

Because what Bridges and Key said in the House at Question Time about the Government delaying the CRL benefits the Ratepayers is a total falsehood. Delaying it only makes the project more expensive to the Rate and Taxpayer through inflation while in the interim congestion gets even worse than what it should have been. And that congestion harms the NATIONAL economy not just Auckland’s!

Thoughts?

  1. Genuine question: How was the Wellington system funded originally?
We hear about roads of national importance as justification to create more motorways. Wouldn’t it be fantastic if the Government actually applied the same logic to all transport options?
They’ve essentially sidestepped their primary function of Governance, instead adopting Management practises and subletting the ‘hot potato’ issues out to the private sector. Why bother even calling them a Government?
