We have nothing to be scared of with medium density developments
When you are use to low density urban geographies, going to medium density can seem scary while high density might be just complete overkill except for the City Centre and a few Metropolitan Centres (like Manukau).
But we need not be scared when medium density is both the GOAT (greatest of all time) and often can do the same as High Density can as well. Done right of course. So how can medium density be your friend? See below from IMM.
From IMM
This is how a neighborhood should be.
What you see here is a compact, vibrant, human-scaled urban fabric—a perfect example of what the Integrated Modification Methodology (IMM) stands for.
Walkable blocks: Small, permeable street grids make it easy to move around on foot or by bike—no need for a car.
Mixed-use buildings: Homes, shops, cafés, services—all layered together. Everyday life happens just outside your door.
Green courtyards and tree-lined streets: Nature is integrated into the built environment, cooling the city, supporting biodiversity, and improving health and livability.
Dense but not high-rise: This is smart density—more people per hectare without sacrificing daylight, air, or quality of life.
Cohesive yet diverse architecture: A continuous urban form that supports community, resilience, and identity.
This is not just beautiful—it’s functional, inclusive, and sustainable.
This is urban design done right.
This is IMM in action.
