It’s Ideology, Stupid.

Left or Right dogmatism I have no time for
Pragmatism I do

Professor Mayhem's avatarSlightly Left of Centre

Your ideology is stupid.

Well, it may not be stupid, but your inability to step back from it for long enough to look at policy objectively is stupid.

It is fine to have an overarching set of guiding morals upon which you base your actions, but when that that set of ingrained beliefs causes you to ignore evidence and stick to your rigid preset positions.

To change your mind in politics is to be labelled a flip-flopper. I am a flip-flopper and fiercely proud of it. I believe that pragmatism trumps dogmatism any day.

Te Reo Maori – Taonga or Trash?

New Zealand no matter what how much warm and fuzzies you feel about it , has an ugly White and Colonial past that still haunts us today.
This past starts soon after the Treat of Waitangi was signed in 1840, climaxes out in the New Zealand Land Wars in the mid-late 19th Century, would continue with NZ’s own White Policy (not as implicit as Australia’s mind you) where even through the 1950s the Maori Language and Culture was considered dead and thus they should be assimilating White Culture in its entirety, before we start getting movements in the 70’s and 80’s where National did pick up on the issues eventually (Labour would as well), and will lead to Treaty Settlement Process of the 90s through to today.

And yet despite trying to correct the injustices we still have our Past coming back to haunt us in a variety of ways. The blog post I am reblogging makes mention of it and another one would be anyone especially White Conservatives that purport the One Law for All crap seen out there.

Then again as the saying goes: Those Ignorant of History Are Doomed to Repeat It

A young John Key once came home from a day at Burnside high school a tad irritated. There seemed to be a problem. The fact that he was not learning a foreign language, meant that he was restricted from entering the form group that boasted the schools highest academic achievers. As his mother was originally from Austria, and spoke fluent German, he proposed to her that she should have taught him the language. Mrs Key responded horrified ‘You’re never going to Europe, what use is German? The whole purpose of education is to do something with your life and German will never do anything for you’. That was the end of that. I am of the strong belief that the Prime Minister’s attitude toward Te Reo Maori and its proliferation within the context of modern day Aotearoa New Zealand was fostered and given foundation through this short, but very pertinent and…

Attacking the Attackers

A debate has already cropped up on Twitter from those on the Left side of the spectrum which means Josh’s post has hit the mark.

However, I do note that Slater has become a diminished force at the moment and no longer holds such influence as he did at his peak in the last term of this current National administration.

That said there is nothing stopping Slater nor others that are equally as diminished such as The Daily Blog from coming back in MK2 form. The question is not whether they are being able to but more to the point are they willing to.

Translating this into Local Government level I have noted the same five Councillors who went against the Deputy Mayor in the Mayoral Censure Motion last year are in some what a diminished capacity themselves with their attacks against the rest of the Council.

While I give credit for being predictable their attacks against the other 15 Councillors (incl, the Deputy Mayor) falls into the same situation John has mentioned about the Democrats vs the Koch Brothers.

Now there is plenty of opportunity to be had with the valuations vs rates vs Unitary Plan saga as is. But these five Councillors are fighting the ever changing war using the same battle tactics that has so far denied Conservatives taking control of the Council in itself. New blood using both new and old tools such as path pounding and blogs seem to be carving out their strategies in the war that is valuations vs Rates vs the Unitary Plan. Whether this new blood steps up for the full assault and test themselves via the voting processes in 2016 has yet to be seen but I bet they are working such strategies as I write this.

As for blogs having influence at Local Government Level? Yes they do and can wield quite a bit of influence for better or for worse with quite mixed results in both success and failures.

Two particular blogs hold such prestige with two main stream media pieces also holding that prestige as well. And all four treat it with absolute respect as well even when the four might differ in opinion.

This article from Politico.com made me think about the political influence of bloggers in New Zealand and the electoral value in attacking them.

Bloggers will, from time to time, come across information that brings about the downfall of a political figure. They will also be involved, on occasion, in conversations with or about a politician that eventually brings about their demise.

Information, when combined with a significant audience is power and, in this day and age, information is a tradable commodity. The bigger the audience gets, the more influential the blogger becomes.

So, if as above, some bloggers are significantly influential, attacking ones that work against you makes sense, right? Drawing attention to their lies, or misinformation or their misinterpretation, deliberate or otherwise, of events and setting the record straight once and for all will diminish the influence of the blog and its author, won’t it?

Attacking the source will…

Blogger? Politician? What does Forman think?

Foreman would have similar views in politics as I have, that being one of Social Liberalism. If you do not know what Social Liberalism then look it up in Wikipedia and while you are there Wiki ‘Common Good.’

But while I have made it long known that I am a Social Liberal some rather interesting situations come about.
Social Liberalism is Centre Left yet from 2003 until just before the election thanks to my electorate MP Judith Collins I was a member of the Young Nats, and the National Party. Just a note that when I resigned from National I left a clause in there leaving it open for me to return to the Party if two conditions were met. So far one has been met.

People find it odd of me being a Social Liberal belong to the National Party until recently. This is most likely I got along with other members well and they were more accommodating than those of the Labour and Green Parties. I don’t know what it was but something left me cold with Labour and the Greens and it still does today even with National ballsing up as is at the moment.

That said I also get along with Centre Left people as well but I have noticed more of recent that they have left Labour or the Greens just as I have left National. The point being my values allow me to interact with both sides and often forge solutions using Best of Both Worlds pragmatism. Hence while I do believe in a hand up for those in need I am also a believer of a good old fashioned boot up the arse to get them motivated as well as some days the boot is needed to give that person a realisation and break them out of self pittying wallowing.

So that leaves the question if I were to run for an Auckland Council Governing Body decision how would my political values play out.

It is complex as Local Government transcends the typical Left Right paradigm in Central Government politics. For one I would be quite a strict Fiscal Conservative and looking for new ways of boosting the revenue stream without resorting to constant rates rises. The method I am looking at seriously is through Council becoming more proactive in development and leaseholding to gain a good stream of rental income especially from Metropolitan Centres and City Centre sites (if they stop selling the damn Land off first).

City Building wise I factor both social and physical infrastructure in where as the right wing seems to be blind on the social stuff.

So this means balanced development across the city with roads, your rubbish services, your parks, your libraries, and some cultural events there and there. The Mayor’s Spatial Priorities to which I have looked at before I would serious run with in targeting the bulk of investment in Auckland Building but at the same time not forget everyone else. Of course the Spatial Priorities are rotated every 5-7 years.

As for Planning? Well another post as I am meant to be looking at on how I am a Social Liberal. Oh wait that means liberalisation of the Unitary Plan. Heh there you go.

So there you have it. I am a Social Liberal who gets on well with both sides but find National more warm than Labour and the Greens.

Oh and I think I just did a soft launch on my bid for Council 2016.

“Where do you stand politically?” – Reader

Simple question? No. It is about the most complex question one can be asked, in a political sense, and I have found myself answering it a lot more since I stood up on my online soapbox and started giving the world my views.

Well, let me see. Overall I would classify myself, perhaps unsurprisingly, as slightly left of centre.

I have been called to the right of President Reagan by people on the hard left (thanks Kate Davis @ The Daily “Faily” Blog) and to the Left of Hone Harawira by my dear old right leaning brother.

I would call this a centrist victory, but I suppose, as has been put to me, it is not really for me to define the nature of my political views and to place myself on the spectrum. I, as a fledgling public figure am simply to…

The police “raid” of Nicky Hager’s house searching for evidence on the identity of Rawshark prompted some in the know to come forward to the cops about what they knew.

Without giving names for fear of prejudicing the case against certain individuals, a source close to the action from the left has advised that the police have been speaking to several people with direct knowledge of both the hacking and the motivations behind it.

“Those involved have been shitting themselves ever since Hager’s stuff got seized.” the source told Slightly Left of Centre this afternoon.

There are a few in the firing line who were looking pretty smug before and just after the now infamous “Moment of Truth” debacle, which turned out to be a more than hour long advert for Kim Dotcom’s latest Mega service, who are now feeling rather hot under the collar. Slightly Left understands…

Government Criticises Itself

Indeed thanks for the laughs and such laughs as the National Party Whips unable to get a simple vote right when a motion to close debate on the now defunct Paid Parental Leave Bill was making its way through the processes.

National you are providing some cheap laughs from either comm’s ineptness or Whip ineptness in a motion procedure. Thanks though seeming the Left is still in the same position of the Titanic right now

A Home for Life?

English and National are thinking in 1 Dimensional terms again which is pretty easy to level against the Right Wing. Probably because they see the world in black and white rather than the full spectrum of colours it really is.

The Left Wing arguably can think in three dimensional terms thus non black and white type of thinking.

I agree with what John has put here for the State Housing situation insofar as this is what National should be doing. That is thinking in three dimensional terms……
Something that is not very hard to do (although that will lead me to a STEAM vs STEM debate – for another time)

When there are thousands of people on a waiting list for a state house, should we be allowing people who have taken the hand up provided by the state, made something of themselves to occupy state houses permanently?

Yes, we should.

Should those houses remain state houses once the tenants are able to pay market rent/mortgage repayments?

No they shouldn’t.

We’re the Government to implement a programme whereby tenants who could afford to buy their home, either directly, or as a rent to buy scheme (without the fish hooks in private r2bs) then we should be giving them that opportunity. Thus giving the tenant the opportunity to become a homeowner.

If this was to be done it would allow the government to balance its social responsibility to provide welfare housing, while allowing it to release capital to be reinvested in higher priority housing areas.

What is lacking in Bill English’s…

Ad’s Posing as Journalism

We have this problem on both sides of the Political coin. While Slater should take a six month break from Blogging, Bomber should just sod off entirely with his “My way or the electorate is too stupid and needs to be educated” mantra.

Being tone deaf as Bomber, or inept which cost the Left despite the amount of cock ups from the Right, or ad’s posing as journalism does not help our democratic institution one little bit.

Suggestion to Central Politico Bloggers: Take a break until March next year and come back. Enjoy the Summer, recharge, refresh, new ideas.

That said plenty of fodder is up for grabs at Local Government level looking at the feeds this morning.

Note: Talking Auckland does not take paid content and all guest posts are marked as such. All pressers are also as marked as well.

Professor Mayhem's avatarSlightly Left of Centre

This morning I read a lengthy piece of advertising for left wing blogs.

You can see this advertisement here.

The “article” in question poses as journalism and purports to be an analysis of the impact of left wing blogs on the election.

While there is an element of analysis, the article reads more as a “if you don’t agree with Martyn Bradbury on The Daily Blog then you are confusing the message, and are the reason we lost.” (Like it’s nothing to do with being completely politically inept?)

The piece begins with a look at the ideal post election scenario as this clown (Alleged Lefty Troll and Journalism Hack, Philip Matthews) would have liked to see it:

In a parallel universe, David Cunliffe is the prime minister of New Zealand presiding over a Labour-NZ First minority government in a happy arrangement with the Green Party. Internet Mana, backed by…

Now Local Politics; that is where the action is thanks to our ever so wonderful Mayor and his 20 Councillors providing some ever so entertainment even it is blooming painful to watch.

So life’s been rather frantically busy since my last post. A week and a half managed to flash by, filled with full Court days, interesting experiences with chainsaws, and visitations from Perth-based relatives. Sitting down at a keyboard to blog came a very distant second, third or possibly fourth in the ‘interesting things to do’ stakes.

Nonetheless, here’s a brief recap for those who were also avoiding the political world:

  • Much humour was derived from Green MP Steffan Browning and his advocacy on behalf of homeopathy as a cure for Ebola. For quite some time, the Greens had managed to project a face of relative sanity (setting aside Russel Norman’s flirtation with quantitive easing), only to end up the butt of innumerable homeopathy-inspired jokes on Twitter. On the plus side, the party leadership shut Browning down swiftly. And Middle New Zealand doesn’t give a damn about political jokes on Twitter, so…

October ’14 – NZ blogs sitemeter ranking

What might seem to be a slow down for some blogs if I were to compare October’s stats to September’s stats (election not withstanding) Talkking Auckland shot up the rankings to 31st for the October month.

It has been a busy month with Auckland Development Committee presentations, Alternative Transport Funding Package announcements, and of course last week the Mayor releasing his preferred Rating policy for the 2015-2025 Long Term Plan.

And of course Talking Auckland is trying out pod casts around topical issues which seem to be going down a real treat for readers – well listeners now.

Talking Auckland thanks readers/listeners for their patronage and comments/feedback. Without you Talking Auckland wouldn’t be able to happen.

November should be a busy month with debate continuing around transport, housing, and Auckland Council finances before the Christmas/New Years break. After that we are right back in it with the consultation period for the 2015-2025 Long Term Plan due to go operative July 1 2015.

No rest for the weary – really

PLEASE NOTE: Sitemeter is still playing up but far fewer blogs are effected. I have done a manual work around but it was still impossible to get the stats for a the blogs that I list below. Maybe more bloggers will shift to StatCounter or other counter. No stats could be found for these blogs:

Works in progress
Social Media and the 2014 General Election
Sportsfreak
Science Behind the Curtain
Looking in the square
Rugby Tips
Save our schools NZ

There are now over 300 blogs on the list, although I am weeding out those which are no longer active or have removed public access to sitemeters. (Let me know if I weed out yours by mistake, or get your stats wrong). Every month I get queries from people wanting their own blog included. I encourage and am happy to respond to queries but have prepared a list of…
