Fare Rise on Auckland Rail?

Is Auckland Transport About to Move Rail Fares – Up?

UPDATE: NEW INFORMATION CLARIFYING ON INCOMING RAIL FARE MOVEMENT AS I WROTE THIS POST. IT FOLLOWS:

Auckland Transport will announce after their Board Meeting today at AT-HQ Henderson that there will be actual fare movement for rail fares. It is stressed highly that some fares will go up and others will go down. However there is no word on capping fares or the Family Pass after a six month campaign by BR:AKL to have that pass restored for off-peak and weekend usage and passengers. BR:AKL believes the recent backsliding in rail patronage (which at current rates will fall back below 10 million rail passenger tips in April (after the March Madness spike) has caused Auckland Transport to back off a blanket fare increase. We await the announcement from the AT Board this evening

I received a tip-off last night on a POSSIBLE (know your English please folks) fare movement in Auckland rail fares. The wording was spotted on Page 20 in Item Seven of the Business Report of the upcoming AT Board meeting which I believe is being held today.

You can see the wording in the embedded agenda below:

If it does not go straight to page 20, just scroll away until it does – the wording is at the top of page 20 in the Phase Three Line which reads:

Phase Three will commence with the increase of the $10.30 Onboard Fare to $20. It is proposed to align this to the implementation of ANY fare price changes on Sunday 17th March 2013

Now this is why at the top of the post I said the word “possible’ folks. It means Auckland Transport could move any of the fares in any direction – although experience will teach Auckland that a fare change usually means up (however the new ferry service to Hobsonville got a fare decrease so there is some hope).

It was raised with me in Twitter that one set of fares might move and the others not:

  1. Hey, just got tipped off to a possible fare rise for Auckland Rail users next month. Am investigating.

  2. AkTransportBlog ‏@AkTransportBlog

@BenRoss_AKL Fare change does not necessarily mean fare rise. Also could be a number of things, cash fares could increase but not HOP fares

  3. Ben Ross ‏@BenRoss_AKL

@AkTransportBlog was thinking that – but that is still a technical increase and something I got AT on last September forcing a reversal

That technical reversal was done after I did catch Auckland Transport out on a technical fare rise as people moved from the old 10-Trip Paper Tickets to the new AT-HOP Cards. The two particular posts on that were:

The second of the two posts illustrates AT reversing the technical fare rise.

However still no luck on the Family Pass folks, although I did take questioning on that by Councillor Mike Lee in front of other AT senior members at the recent Regional Public Transport Plan hearing in Manukau at the beginning of the month. So still a case of wait and see here.

I do have state that while most of us here are cynical when we see AT about to undertake fare changes (as they usually go up) I have read else where that AT are about to start a mass marketing campaign to attract off-peak and weekend patronage. Now I will be damned to know how that is going to happen unless we get AT-HOP fare caps or the Family Pass returning next month. $57.80 for a family to go from Papakura to Britomart and back again

NOTE: NEW INFORMATION RECEIVED IN REGARDS TO FARE MOVEMENTS. PLEASE READ TOP OF POST FOR UPDATE. NEW EXCLUSIVE POST WILL BE RELEASED ON FARE MOVEMENTS AS SOON AS INFORMATION IS AVAILABLE
