Mock-Up for Manukau “Metro Town Centre” Underway

More efficient use of car parking space

Today I was playing around with the Manukau Metro Town Centre (located on the current surface car at the south end of the Westfield Manukau Mall (opposite the Courts on Manukau Station Road) as well as laying down the foundation to the “park” next door (over the top of another surface car park)

The purpose behind this Metro Town Centre at the southern end of the Manukau Mall complex is to “substitute” the economically unproductive surface car parking currently there with some that is not only more productive but also promotes people ahead of the car. The actual car parks do not disappear but rather are placed “underground” with the new Metro Town Centre built over the top. My Free Parking is NOT Free Parking post outlines the costs and inefficiencies of surface car parking which consumes around 60% of the Manukau City urban foot print (not including Hayman Park).

This first picture shows the laying down of the boundaries for the Manukau Metro Town Centre over the top of the existing car park:

The green space covering the car park towards the top right of that picture will become a park/open space with paths, playgrounds, gardens and a connection between a proposed Sky Train station on Manukau Station Road, the Countdown entrance of the Mall, and the south-east entrance of the Metro Town Centre complex. I have added a “wall” with the Mall entrance doors (in yellow) to give relative scale to the eventual full mock-up of the Manukau Metro Centre. The two “boxes” that can be seen are the two main car parking entrances for the bi-level underground car park. The dark asphalt is the road “connection” around the complex to allow service vehicles to reach both the complex and Manukau Mall itself. The roads are shared spaces with 10km/h speed limits.

Still quite a bit to do with adding more levels as well as basic detailing of the complex but in the picture you can get the basic concept of the Metro Town Centre complex. Oh and the car parks are leased to Westfield who run the Manukau Mall as Auckland Council own the land the existing car parks sit on.

Features of the complex include:

  • Dual car parking entrances for bi-level underground car park. Both entrances are connected via access-ways to Manukau Station Road
  • Shared Spaces with the “ring road” that rings around the complex to allow service vehicles access to both the complex and Mall
  • Metro Town Centre linked to proposed Sky Train via a station next to the park. The Manukau Transport Interchange is a quick five-minute walk via the pedestrian mall from the complex
  • Wide pedestrian “malls” both covered and uncovered while acting like “Main Streets” found in classic town centres
  • 10 storey apartment complex
  • Retail, food-court and office space included in multi-storey complex
  •  A Metro Centre Circle in the middle of the complex that would act like a Town Centre Square
  • To be Green Star 6+ rated in terms of sustainability
  • Plazas included on northern and north-western end of the complex

I will post more pictures of the mock-up as I continue to tinker away with it over the weekend.
