Major roads in Central Auckland will be dug up before the end of the year to make way for the City Rail Link.

Resource consents (click for link to consents) for the first section of the $2.5bn rail tunnel were publicly notified today.

The consents outlined plans to dig between Britomart Station and Wyndham St.

The works would involve major traffic disruptions and changes to bus routes around lower Queen St and Albert St.

Auckland Transport’s CRL Project Director Chris Meale said a construction design contract would be awarded soon and work would start before the end of the year.

It was a significant step for Auckland’s integrated transport network, he said.

“We are well underway to deliver the council’s number one transport priority.”

The long-awaited CRL project was likely to take at least three years to construct.

Funding for the initial works has been set aside by the Auckland Council and was not dependent on government contributions.

Public submissions on the resource consents close March 5 and can be made in written form to Auckland Council, Private Bag 92300, Auckland 1142 or online.

A note from earlier when Councillor George Wood stated that I should delay the City Rail Link my answer right back was:

The answer is simply “NO”
No to delaying the City Rail Link main start date beyond 2018

Alternative Funding for the CRL Stations is already available from overseas models, our elected representatives to relieve the final bill on rate payers

I am growing rather bored of Councillors re-litigating debates and will soon have no problem with Auckland Transport, and Development Auckland working with the Local Boards bypassing the Governing Body in its entirety and getting shit done – properly

All things squared away Phase One begins at the end of the year. Completion of the CRL will be 2023 assuming a 2018 main phase start date
