New bus station for Manukau

Getting around Manukau and south Auckland is set to become easier with a new bus station.

The proposed Manukau Bus Station is a key part of the roll out of a new public transport network across south Auckland. It will provide Aucklanders with a new network of buses and trains that will get them to their destination faster and more efficiently.

The Manukau train station sees an average of 1037 daily week day passenger trips and is currently the 13th busiest station in Auckland.

What’s missing is a bus station to create a bus and train transport hub for the south.

Auckland Transport (AT) has now developed concept design plans for the proposed new high quality bus station, aimed at making it easy to transfer between trains and buses, as well as between bus services. It will be designed to have sufficient capacity for long distance coach services. The facility will also feature a large enclosed waiting area similar to an airport lounge.

AT seeks feedback on the concept design to help make an informed decision to provide a high quality bus station and customer experience.

Located right next to Manukau train station, the Manukau civic offices car park on Putney Way (between Davies Avenue and Osterley Way) will be transformed to a 23-bay bus station. The train and bus stations will be linked by a covered walkway.

The AT project, in partnership with the NZ Transport Agency, is expected to cost approximately $26 million.

AT Group Manager, Investment & Development, John Worth says Manukau is the gateway to south Auckland and Auckland Airport.

“By providing a public transport hub at Manukau, it will provide people with greater transport choices by providing better connections with the places Aucklanders want to go.

“This is part of our aim to reduce reliance on private transport to ease congestion on local and arterial roads.”

The entire structure will be designed to provide a high quality public transport experience which will be safe and accessible for everyone.

Temporary bus stops will be installed on Davies Avenue to allow the new network to operate smoothly until the station is constructed and opens in the second half of 2017.

“We’d like to invite people to have their say in the design process, so we can understand what is important to public transport users and the wider community that will then inform the design,” adds Mr Worth.

To support the rollout of the new network in south Auckland, AT is also is building new bus and train stations at key locations like Pukekohe and Otahuhu.

Bus station features

The bus station is likely to feature the following:

  • Convenience kiosks.
  • A ticket office.
  • AT Metro customer service.
  • Drop-off and pick-up facilities.
  • Cycle parking facilities.
  • Taxi parking.
  • Customer waiting areas.
  • Bus staff office facilities.
  • 24 hour security, help points and CCTV.
  • Toilets.
  • Designed to allow for regional coach services (for example, services currently using Leyton Way at Westfield Manukau will be moved to the bus interchange).

The consultation period starts today and closes on Friday, 20 November 2015. AT will hold three public information days for members of the public to speak with the project team and get their questions answered:

  • Tuesday, 10 November, 12pm to 2pm – Centre Court, Westfield – Manukau.
  • Thursday, 12 November 2015, 5pm to 8pm – Centre Court, Westfield – Manukau.
  • Saturday, 14 November 2015, 10am to 1pm – Ground level, Manukau Institute of Technology, entrance to Manukau Station.

  1. I see AT is still keen on the disastrous sawtooth design.
    As an alternative how about while keeping the angled bays the actual passenger concourse be built on an upper floor with each platform having lift, stairs and escalator access, with the buses then driving on through an out lane.
    While this will cost more it will save the bus companies a lot in (lack of) panel beating costs and be far safer for passengers
    I’m assuming that the bus and train stations will be connected by an underground concourse

      1. The advantage the angled platform would have is more buses could use the station at the same time. Parallel bays means you can have buses passing while one at a stop decides to pull out and the potential for collisions.
        To make the angled bays even safer they could be light controlled to allow safe passage for each bus. Light control would be more difficult for parallel bays.
