Stars Shine Bright in Auckland’s Rising Jewel #BetterAuckland

Local Awards Recognizing Young Leadership Talent

On the back of South Auckland – The CONTINUED Rising Jewel in Auckland’s Crown #BetterAuckland today we have even more great news coming out of the South.

From Otara-Papatoetoe Local Board:

Local leadership talent shines bright

A group of top leaders from Ōtara and Papatoetoe schools have been acknowledged in an official awards ceremony hosted by the Ōtara-Papatoetoe Local Board and its Youth Advisory Group.

Ōtara-Papatoetoe Local Board Civic Leadership Awards were presented to Year 10 students with special leadership potential at Tangaroa College, Sir Edmund Hillary Collegiate, Papatoetoe High School, Kia Aroha College, De La Salle College, and Aorere College prize giving ceremonies last year. Award recipients received a trophy and up to $600 toward their Year 11 school fees and related costs, along with the chance to further their leadership skills.

Local Board Member Lotu Fuli says this award ceremony acknowledges not only the students, but their whole support network – families, teachers and coaches.

“Our local board is big on fostering leadership potential in our communities. If we want that spark to grow, it’s important we make available as many development opportunities as we can,” says Ms Fuli.

“These students have shown fantastic leadership qualities and great potential through their service to the school or the community.

“As well as acknowledging their efforts, we want to nurture their talent. They’ve had the chance to put their skills into practice on the Ōtara-Papatoetoe Local Board Youth Advisory Group.

“The group provides us with advice on how Council strategies, policies and plans will affect the needs and ideas of local youth. It’s perfect having them on board.

“We’re really happy to be promoting confidence and motivation in our youth and we’re definitely going to enjoy seeing their achievements into the future.”
