About the Regional Fuel Tax and Regional Land Transport Plan

Regional Fuel Tax (RFT)

We need to fund large transport projects in Auckland in a way that is fairer than just increasing rates.

We are proposing a Regional Fuel Tax of 10 cents per litre (plus GST) added to sales of petrol and diesel within Auckland starting on 1 July 2018 for a period of 10 years.

Efficient transport affects the entire community. Without a RFT the funding we have available will only cover renewing our existing transport network and the projects we have already committed to – for example the City Rail Link.

We expect that the RFT, with other funding sources, will mean we can invest an additional $4.3 billion in transport infrastructure over the next decade. This will be allocated across 14 specific projects which target different parts of transport infrastructure.

Regional Land Transport Plan (RLTP)

The goal of this RLTP is to ensure that Auckland can address its current challenges and take advantage of future growth.

The plan also lays out the vision for Auckland’s transport over the next ten years – an accessible, safe and sustainable city and region.

The RLTP focuses on:

  • reducing congestion
  • improving freight reliability
  • road safety
  • promoting walking and cycling
  • advancing public transport.
How the RFT and the RLTP work together

The RLTP lays out the vision for Auckland’s transport infrastructure. This includes particular challenges and areas that we need to concentrate on to address those.

The RFT is focused on funding that vision, with defined projects and budgets to create transport infrastructure that will help carry Auckland into the future.

What we need your feedback on

For both the RFT and RLTP we want your feedback on the projects you think are important in creating a well-connected Auckland that has capacity to grow and offer residents genuine choices for travel.

All your feedback will be given to decision-makers and elected members to help shape the final RFT proposal and RLTP. This feedback will be available for you to review at the end of May.

When you can have your say

You can have your say on the future of transport in Auckland from 1 May to 14 May 2018.

You have until May 14 to have your say!
